How Women Have Captured the Attention of the World

The oppression and sexual abuse of women have been a prominent headline for most of the 2019 calendar.

Bloomberg reported; The headlines alone are dizzying. Since the New York Times reported allegations of serial predation by movie mogul Harvey Weinstein a year ago, at least 425 prominent people across industries have been publicly accused of sexual misconduct, a broad range of behavior that spans from serial rape to lewd comments and abuse of power.

That equals one newly reported person facing accusations every day for the last 12 months.

This sparked the resurgence of the “Me Too” movement.

In 2006, Tarana Burke coined the phrase “Me Too” as a way to draw awareness of sexual violence against women and young girls.

The phrase resurfaced in October 2017 when actress Alyssa Milano took to Twitter to encourage those who experienced sexual harassment to reply with the hashtag #MeToo. The tweet swept through the Twitter world. More than 61,000 replied to the tweet with 22,000 retweets.

The subject also went viral on Facebook, 4.7 million people engaged with “Me Too” posts in less than 24 hours, with over 12 million posts, comments and reactions. Amazing.
